DIY Burlap Lace Vase

Do you read The CSI Project? If not, I really encourage you to become a follower. CSI stands for "create something inspiring" and that's exactly what the site does. Each week they introduce a new project challenge with a theme. One week was a "$5 Challenge" in which I submitted my DIY Baby Favor; last week was the "Pillow Challenge" and this week is "Burlap." It's really inspiring to see what everyone comes up with! Since I don't own a sewing machine, I stayed away from the Pillow Challenge, but I thought I could do something simple enough to submit for the Burlap challenge. What do you think of my burlap vase? Springy? It's definitely easy!

What I Used:
  • Cylinder vase (mine is 3 1/2" in diameter)
  • Acrylic Paint and foam brush
  • (Optional) Buttons or other embellishment
  • Lace
  • Stencils (I found mine at Dollar Tree)
  • Double-sided tape
  • Scissors
What I Did:
  • Measure your vase's circumference. Then, estimate how high you want your burlap. I made mine 4 1/2" high. Cut out your strip of burlap.
  • Using your foam brush, blot the stencil with the paint until it's well-covered. Then, continue with your pattern throughout the burlap strip. I alternated between large and small flowers. (Process shown below.) Set aside to dry. Once it's dry, apply your embellishments.
  • Cut out two pieces of trim lace to fit around your vase. Using double-sided tape, affix the lace to the vase.
  • Then, apply the finished burlap over the lace. The double-sided tape I used has managed to hold the burlap as well. However, I'm wondering how long it will continue to hold.
  • Enjoy with some flowers!
I want to try to make another one of these, but using white paint with embellishments in the middle of the flowers. The variations are endless!
